The Wilson Art Gallery will host “Here & There,” an exhibit of paintings and pastels of landscape and figurative works by Mark Topp.

 

With little formal art education, Topp studied portraiture while in high school with internationally renowned Syracuse painter, Robert Hofmann, subsequently broadening his portfolio to include landscapes. His cityscapes and portraiture interpreting central New York and Pennsylvania have been exhibited in Syracuse, Harrisburg and Pittsburgh. He has also received awards from the Cooperstown Art Association National show (2000) and the Mystic Maritime International (1989).

On Friday, October 9, from 4 to 6 p.m., there will be an opening reception for the exhibit, which will be on display at the Wilson Art Gallery from October 9 to November 6 during regular library hours. The reception and exhibit are free and open to the public.

Come join the Le Moyne College Book Club on Wednesday, October 14 as we discuss Being Mortal by Atul Gawande. We will be meeting in the Bernat Special Activities Room in the Noreen Reale Falcone Library from 7-8:30 pm. Refreshments will be served!

Pet therapy at the library is back and better than ever! Due to popular demand, we will have regularly scheduled pet therapy sessions throughout the semester. These events will be held in the Bernat Room during the following times.

With support from the Central New York Irish Cultural Society (CNY-ICS) and the Ancient Order of Hibernians, the Library has purchased an American first edition copy of W. B. Yeats’ 1928 work, The Tower.

“Sailing to Byzantium,” “Leda and the Swan,” and “Among School Children” are today considered some of the best and most famous in the Yeats canon. Virginia Woolf, in her unsigned review in the April 21, 1928 issue of The Nation and Anthenaeum, wrote, “Mr. Yeats has never written more exactly and more passionately.” Yeats was not so sure. Later editions contain numerous edits by the poet, making the first edition, as is true in all literature, so important.

Written between 1912 and 1927, the poems in The Tower are evocative of the image of Thoor Ballylee, the 15th century Norman building in Galway purchased by Yeats in 1917. This structure dons the iconic book cover that was designed by Thomas Sturge Moore, poet and play write and collaborator of Yeats in the Literary Theatre Club.

This acquisition and the display in the Library of other rare Yeats editions are part of Yeats2015, the worldwide celebration of the Irish writer’s 150th birthday.

This work is held in the Irish Literature Collection within the Library’s Tatyana Popovic Special Collections & Archives.

September 11 – October 2, 2015

An exhibit of recent work by Le Moyne faculty members will open the 2015-16 season of exhibits at the Wilson Art Gallery in the Noreen Reale Falcone Library on the Le Moyne campus.

The exhibit features the work of Barry Darling, Jen Gandee, Katya Krenina, David Moore, and Richard Williams, all members of Le Moyne’s visual and performing arts department. They work in a wide range of media and styles — paintings, drawings, photography and sculpture; expressionism, symbolism, narrative, and realism.

The exhibit opens on Friday, September 11, and will run through Friday, October 2, and can be seen during regular library hours. An opening reception will be held in the Wilson Art Gallery on Friday, September 11, from 4 – 6 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. For more information, call (315) 445-4153.

Barry Darling’s primary medium is painting, and his works are included in numerous private and corporate collections. He holds a Master of Fine Arts degree from Louisiana University. His teaching experience includes 28 years as director of the art department at Henninger High School in Syracuse, N.Y. Darling exhibits widely throughout the U.S. and is currently represented by Adieb Khadoure Fine Arts in Santa Fe, N.M. His painting studio is in Tully, N.Y.

Jen Gandee is a ceramic artist and graduate of the Syracuse University School of Art and Design. Her work explores the place where art and craft collide, combining recreated historical forms and reinterpreted traditional patterns and techniques with found objects and appropriated modern imagery.

Katya Krenina has a passion for book illustration, and for translating the written word into images. She is influenced by her Eastern European roots and feels a strong connection to folk art and storytelling traditions. She has published more than 15 books, which have won national and international awards, and has exhibited her work across the country and abroad.

David Moore received a Master of Fine Arts from Syracuse University. He has exhibited his work in galleries and cultural centers both regionally and nationally, and is a recipient of the 2007 Light Work Grant from Light Work in Syracuse, N.Y. His photography books, “False Idols” and “Ephemeral Beings” are in the collections of museums and galleries throughout the United States.

Richard Williams is a professional illustrator and portrait artist with a Master of Fine Arts in Illustration from Syracuse University. His work is in the private collections of Steven Spielberg, George Lucas and Howard Stern.
