For the first time since 1981 (when the current library was opened), there is new furniture in the library! Come on over and try out the new soft seating that is sprinkled throughout the first floor. You can work by yourself in a chair with a built in arm desk, or you can push two chairs together for a cozy couch to share with a friend.

Most of the old furniture was moved to the second floor of the Library, greatly enhancing the soft seating available up there as well. So no matter where you like to work in the Library, you’ll likely find more seating options available for you.

This new furniture has come about mainly in response to student feedback and requests – so we thank you for your input and your help in making the Library a more comfortable place!

The Wilson Art Gallery will host “The Thornden Park Bulldogs”, an exhibit of photographs by Irene Liu, Associate Professor of Philosophy at Le Moyne College, documenting a local youth football team over two seasons as it pursues wins and cultivates the virtues of sportsmanship.

Irene Liu earned her PhD from the University of Chicago and her areas of research are ethics, human nature, and the history of philosophy. Before pursuing her doctorate degree, Liu worked as an art educator at the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Boys’ Club of New York. She originally intended this project to explore the cultivation of sportsmanship and the community of family and friends that forms around it, but in the aftermath of Ferguson and #BlackLivesMatter, the photographs also have the goal to make Black boys visible — smiling, playing, focusing, growing, and working together in the pursuit of excellence.

On Friday, February 26, from 4 to 6 p.m., there will be an opening reception for the exhibit, which will be on display at the Wilson Art Gallery from February 26 – March 25 during regular library hours. The reception and exhibit are free and open to the public. For more information, call (315) 445-4153.

The Noreen Reale Falcone Library was awarded a $12,600 Conservation Discretionary Grant from NYS Library in December 2015 to preserve its U.S. Civil War items.

“The Photographic Views of Sherman’s Campaign,” published in 1866, is an album of photographer George Barnard’s 61 original imperial size albumen prints depicting the aftermath of General Sherman’s march through the South.

 

The album, along with the original letter to Barnard from William Tecumseh Sherman expressing his support for the project, were gifts to the College in 1997 from John B. Vita ’54 and Mary M. Vita.

George Barnard’s photography stands along with those of Mathew Brady, Alexander Gardner, and Timothy O’Sullivan, in advancing the photographic techniques used in the 19th century and in documenting the American Civil War. Barnard, who moved as a child to upstate New York, at one time had studios in Oswego and Syracuse and died in Syracuse in 1902. He worked for Mathew Brady at the outbreak of the Civil War and performed the difficult task of following the armies’ path and documenting the violence and destruction of war.

Originally intended to make 100 copies of these custom leather-bound albums, Barnard, it is believed, might have made only half as much. Le Moyne College’s copy is one of six held by libraries and museums in New York State. There are only 25 reported copies held by such public institutions.

The Turnitin website has been experiencing a DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attack for most of the day on January 22. Although the @TurnitinStatus Twitter account reports that service is “stabilized”, it remains slow into the afternoon.
